GREAT START FOR WINTER SPORTS TEAMS!!!
The wrestling team captured the team title at the prestigious Sons of Italy Tournament over the weekend. The 16-team event was held at the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington. The Hillies posted 156 points to edge second place Central Catholic. Jake Nicolosi led the way with a first place finish, while Nick Tejada and Sam Prescott posted second and third place finishes respectfully. The Hillies will host a tri-meet this Saturday starting at 10:00 AM.
At the first big indoor track meet of the year, Keith May and Jayla Kitchings impressed many in the track community. Both took first place in their respective events at the MSTCA Winter Festival held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. May won the boys’ 1,000 meter run, leading the field of 107 of the best high school runners in the state. He posted a time of 2:37.33, to win by five tenths of a second. Kitchings took the title in the girls’ 55 meter dash with a blazing time of 8.90. She blew away the field of 91 runners. Sean Glass placed sixth in the 55 meter dash and Brianna Harrington finished eighth in the 1 mile run.
The gymnastics team opened the season in impressive fashion with a victory that could not have been any closer. The Hillies defeated Chelmsford by a score of 124.3-124.15 and did so with just one first place finish – Lilly Mullaney in the vault. Five second place finishes and one third helped lead them to victory. Now in just its third season of existence, the team has grown to 20 participants and is competing with the best in the Merrimack Valley Conference.
The Haverhill-Pentucket-North Andover girls’ hockey program grabbed its first win of the year on Saturday afternoon. The Hillies downed Acton Boxboro by a score of 5-2. The team will be home again this Saturday to face off against rival Andover at noon.
The girls’ basketball team opened the season with a win on the road. The Hillies defeated Everett 64-49 last Wednesday. It was the first win over Everett in the last six meetings between the two teams. The boys’ basketball team was defeated by Weymouth 58-53 in its opener on Sunday. Both teams will be in action on Thursday night at Central Catholic, with the girls’ playing at 5:30 PM followed by the boys at 7:00 PM.
The boys’ hockey team will host the annual Hillie Hockey Christmas Tournament December 26-29. Coyle & Cassidy, Newton North, North Andover, Scituate, Wayland and Wilmington will travel to the Veterans’ Rink at Haverhill High School. Haverhill takes on Newton North in first game at 5:00 PM on December 26.
